DOLPHIN WATCHING AT KALPITIYA
During November to March is the best season, when at times, literally thousands of dolphins can be observed in large pods. To watch dolphins it’s best to take a boat at sunrise and from November 2009 to April 2010, over 3000 guests went to see dolphins and whales. Sightings are so certain that we offer a free dolphin safari the next day if you are unlucky on your first outing. Four types can be seen, namely Spinner, Bottlenose, Risso’s and Pink. The playful, friendly and acrobatic Spinner dolphin(Stenella longirostis) is the most commonly sighted.
Dolphin and Whale watching in Sri Lanka first entered the public consciousness in 2007 when Alankuda Beach Resort started its operations with providing accommodation and boats. This was followed by Mirissa in the South and Dolphin Beach. Spinner Dolphins are the most common and are the most spectacular due to its engaging in acrobatic leaps out of the water. Whilst airborne it rotates along its longitudinal axis, hence the name spinner dolphins. Other Dolphins to be seen are Bottlenose, Risso and Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins or popularly known as Pink Dophins. Though whale sightings are not that frequent off Kalpitiya compared to Dondra, it’s still one of the best places to see the ever smiling and singing chirpy Dolphins. If you are at the right place at the right time – which you can entrust to us – the spinner dolphins in Kalpitiya will give a show in their hundreds, perhaps even in their thousands.
Afternoon – leave for a game drive at Wilpattu National Park and proceed to Anuradhapura.
GAME SAFARI WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK
Wilpattu is one of the oldest National Parks in Sri Lanka Located in Northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka. The park lies within the North-central & North-western providences. The area of the park is 131693 ha. An unusual feature of the park’s topography are the numerous villus: these look like lakes, though they’re actually just depressions filled with rainwater which expand and contract with the seasons, attracting a range of water-birds and wild life. Elephants, leopards, sloth bear, water buffalo and spotted deer are among the large mammals. Coastal belt and willus support abundant birdlife such as painted storks, white ibis, open bills, Whistling teals, spoonbills, cormorants and kingfishers. Apart from them serpent eagles, great racket tail Drongo, Malabar pied hornbills, crested hawk eagles & Sri Lanka junglefowls are commonly seen. Both water monitors and mugger crocodiles can be seen in the willus. Wilpattu National Park is the largest and was one of the most popular national parks until its position close to the front line of the civil war led to its closure in 1985. It was finally reopened in 2003.

A sapling of the “Tree of Enlightenment” under which the Bodhisatva attained Englightenment and became the Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka by Bikkhuni Sangamittha, who was the founder of the order of Buddhist Bikkunis (Nuns) and who was the sister of Ahahat Mahinda, was planted in Anuradhapura. This City of Anuradhapura developed greately afterwards and flourished as the political and religious capital of the country. for over 1,300 years.
This “City of Ruins” and home for “The Sri Maha Bodhi” or the “Tree of Enlightnement”, is not only one of the most sacred places for the Buddhists but also a great Tourist destination. This city has so much to offer to the Pilgrums and Tourists alike. Among the important sites are the great white and fine Ruvanweli Seya (Dagoba), the small but important Thuparama dagoba, Huge 75m high Abhayagiri Dagoba, Jetavanarama Dagoba which is 70n high, the Brazen Palace which has been a nine story building of which the roof was bronze built on 1600 stone pillars (now only the stone pillars are to be seen) etc. This vast area that has been hidden away in the thick jungle for a long time and now turned into one large garden, has ruins of so many Temples, Palaces, Monasteries, Monuments and other important places of interest to be seen.
THE ASCENT TO THE SIGIRIYA ROCK SUMMIT
The ancient city of SIGIRIYA was designated a cultural World Heritage Site in 1982. It is also proposed that the site should be named the eighth wonder of the world, indicating it is in the same league as other international wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Ancient Pyramids. Translated as ‘Lion Rock’ into English, the name of the monument indicates the entrance through which visitors begin their final ascent to the top – through the open jaws and throat (‘giriya’) of a lion (‘sinha’). Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock. The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself. This amazing rock rises incredibly over 600ft up from the scrub jungle and what is more amazing is that its flat top has an area of over 3-1/2 acres. The amazement is not over; not wanting to be second to the Nature’s creation, the King has used this space in its entirety to creat his palace and fortress complexes including a swimming pool on the summit of this rock.

The vegetation in the park comprises predominantly of semi-arid thorny scrub, interspersed with pockets of fairly dense secondary forest. Small patches of mangrove vegetation also occur along the coastal lagoons. The park is renowned for the variety of its wildlife (most notably its many elephants) and its fine coastline (associated with beautiful coral reefs). It also boasts a large number of important cultural ruins, bearing testimony to earlier civilizations and indicating that much of the area used to be populated and well developed.
Your best chance to see a leopard is generally first thing in the morning and then again at dusk. The male leopards in Yala are very confident animals and they are often seen walking the tracks during the day. Young males in particular seem to have no fear of the jeep, which can lead to some excellent photographic opportunities. As well as leopards there is a large number of elephants living inside the park and these can be seen bathing in the numerous lakes within the park. You can also see spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, wild buffaloes, sloth bear, jackal and mongoose. The bird life is also fantastic and it is amazing how close you can get to them from the confines of the jeep, you can see Rosy Starlings, Paradise Flycatchers, Crested Hawk Eagles, Blue-Tailed Bee-Eaters and Common Iora’s.
